The Smiley Tool: Bridging the Gap in Fluorine-Free Foam Performance

Recent tests comparing Fluorine Free (SFFF) Foams have shown that these agents are not yet true “drop in” replacements for AFFF. These SFFF foams perform well, but not optimally when using existing technology and methodology. The need for these new methods of technology is what pushed the design of the Smiley Tool!

Efficient Foam Coverage for Faster, Cost-Effective Tank Fire Suppression

The Smiley Tool, designed by Dwight Williams, brings together Type II and Type III Attack methods, being a deployable wand-like tool to be set upon a tank and used to disperse foam into the Smiley Area of a burning storage tank. The Smiley Area is defined as the area upwind of an attacking monitor that does not get covered quickly by using just the monitor. This position is left open during an attack and can cause issues when extinguishing large diameter tank fires.

The Smiley Tool incorporates increased expansion and optimized application thus leading to lower application rates, less water, and less time used when extinguishing, which results in significant cost savings!

Features

  • Carbon steel construction to be cost-effective (stainless steel options available)
  • Easy to assemble for deployment
  • Easily change orifices for different expansion ratios as desired
  • Saddle mount for simple installation onto tank walls, dike walls, and other structures
  • Configurable with NST, Storz, or pipe thread connections
  • Multiple sizes available (2.5″, 4″, and 6″) for different diameter tanks

Compatibility

These units are compatible with most firefighting foams, including our Dwight’s Signature Series and Shield Series Line of foam. Visit our Foam section for more information!
